July 22, 2007, is a day to remember in the history of
FAAWIS picnics, with possibly the largest crowd ever in attendance.
The theme of the event was ‘LUZVIMINDA – Celebrating
the people of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao’ - simply translated in its
purpose of gathering the many Filipinos in the community. I believe
that the purpose was well served. A large crowd attended the event and
it was a day of unity and camaraderie among friends and families, and
a day filled with fun and excitement, topped by the large variety of
delicious food brought by everyone from their respective regions in
the Philippines. The day was further perfected by the beautiful
weather that was blessed upon the event.
The memorable day started very early in the morning
with the tireless work of the energetic picnic committee as they set
up the picnic grounds and built the Bahay Kubo, which was used for
registration. This was the first time the structure was used for the
picnic which added character and uniqueness to the event.
Mass started the event at 11:00a.m., presided over by
Fr. Jojo Orosa in the open grounds. A bountiful spread awaited the
crowd, and no sooner than the mass had ended, everyone quickly fell in
line and waited patiently for their sumptuous lunch. The wide variety
of food was highlighted by the lechons from our generous donors. Lunch
was followed by games and races such as Sack, 2-legged, and Maria Went
to Town. The creative work and team effort of Ferdie Ramos and Paul
Guzman pulled many kids, and kids at heart, from their seats to
participate in the games. As always, the Pabitin and Piñata were crowd
pleasers where all children grabbed candies with glee as their parents
watched and cheered. The dance floor was a hit for the ladies (and
some men) with the lively music provided by Bong Cabigting.
