Folk Dancing at the 2008 Holiday Folk Fair
By Sheila Plaga-Jackson

Silahis Dance Troupe
The 22-member children’s dance group,
Sampaguita,
led by Becky Abraham and Dr. Marie Rebancos, performed
Subli using decorative
hats and coconut shells in place of the traditional bamboo
castanets. The youth group of 24 dancers,
Liwayway, led by
Christopher Cruz and Flor Ortiguera, performed
Pandanggo Sa Ilaw where
they successfully balanced pseudo-candles on their hands and
heads. The same youth group danced the
Tinikling during the
Fair’s Education Day.
Sheila Plaga-Jackson taught the adult group,
Silahis, the
Kuratsa and the
La Jota Moncadena,
where the ladies wore elegant black-laced
Maria Claras and
traditional white Kimona tops.
Thanks to: all the parents for bringing your children to
the eight weeks of rehearsals; the teachers for your patience
and willingness to teach the children and youth; Angeli
Varona-Camara for arranging the venue; Father Charlie for
kindly permitting us to rehearse at
Our Lady of Good Hope;
Mimi Ballesteros’ group for bringing Sunday meriendas; Miriam
Santos-Amador for the pseudo candles; Isabel Piana for helping
with the costumes; Desiree Harris for the beautiful
Maria Claras; Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Sandoval for their generosity in providing lunches for
the HFF dancers at the Christmas party; my family for your
continued support, patience, and kindly putting up with “Folk
Fair Central” in our dining room for ten weeks; of course the
gracious dancers, and finally my God and Lord Jesus Christ for
giving me the desire, grace, and strength to commit to such a
time consuming yet rewarding experience.
I hope to see all the dancers again at 2009 Fair!
