FAAWIS “Bowl For Fun” – Sport for Everyone By Apolo Guzman
FAAWIS held a “Bowl For Fun” tournament last
March 29, 2008 at Bluemound Bowl. The idea of having sporting events
was started under the leadership of Patrick Moloney, and carried over
to Mimi Ballesteros’ term. With these planned sports activities, we
hope that we can further build community togetherness and get a little
bit of exercise, while having fun. So what is a sport that everyone
can participate in – bowling! Whether you are a first timer, where the
bowling ball always seems to have a fatal attraction to the gutter, a
recreational, or a pro bowler, bowling is a great past time. Most
important of all, however, is that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the
games, food, and camaraderie.
A total of ten teams, two youth and eight adult, participated in the
tournament. The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams.
Each team played three games with the winner of each group playing for
the championship game. The Purple team (Jeff Kale, Joseph De Ungria,
Ken Shimbara, Kevin and Marna Berg) won the championship game
defeating the White team – PNA-WI (Rommel Cruz, Mini Parbs, Rehmie
Azcueta, Maria Solomon Yumang, and Mercy Violanda). The highest
singles awards were given to Phil Knox, who scored 235, and Annalie
Moloney with 164.
Thanks to all who participated in the tournament and the people who
came and supported their teams. Special thanks to the committee
members: Mimi and Mario Ballesteros, Rose Ricks, Lorna Guzman and
Sarah Austria, for a job well done. Thank you, also, to Loida Revelle,
Carol Shimbara, and Kay Baas for helping out during the tournament and
to Dr. Elma Racadio for arranging the venue. A variety of food for
concession was prepared by Rose Ricks and Prescy Griffin. It was such
a fun day of bowling, meeting old friends, and getting to know new
acquaintances.
So, if you like the hollow sound of the pins rattling around, and like
molded plastic seats, watch out for the Fall Tournament scheduled for
September 20th, 2008.
