Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS)
By Ernie Lizarondo - (June 2006)
The society was formed for Filipino-Americans
in the United States, primarily to document the lives, and
contributions of Filipinos, and to preserve and celebrate its rich
cultural heritage. Conversely, we hold forums on Philippine history
and other subjects of general interest to our members. The FANHS
national chapter, located in Seattle, Washington,

was chartered in 1985, and while the Wisconsin
organization has existed since l990, it was officially chartered in
2001. The society aims:
1. To conduct research and studies, gather, promote and disseminate
published works on Filipino-American history.
2. To provide a repository for research and gathered materials.
3. To create exhibits.
4. To promote and hold forums and public programs.
5. To sponsor fund raising events to accomplish these purposes.
Since its charter in 2001, the Wisconsin Chapter has accomplished the
following:
1. Hosted the 2001 Midwest Conference, held at St. Norbert's College,
De Pere, Wisconsin.
2. Contributed to the Milwaukee Community Quilt, "The Cultural Fabric
of Milwaukee: Weaving Communities Together", sponsored by the United
States Postal Service, in commemoration of its 4th Multicultural Day.
The quilt has since been donated to the Milwaukee, Public Museum.
3. Participated in cultural exhibits at the Asian Moon Festival
(2001), exhibits at the Milwaukee Public Museum, the Milwaukee Post
Office, the welcome of new citizens program of the Immigration and
Naturalization Service, and in programs sponsored by the Milwaukee
Public Schools among others.
4. HAPAG (Heritage of Asia Performing Arts Group) is its cultural arm.
The group concentrates on developing programs for youth in culture and
arts. Mostly second generation Filipinos, upon request from parents
who desire to instill in their children an appreciation of their
culture and heritage. HAPAG conducts story telling sessions, folk
singing, choral and performing arts. HAPAG raised funds by caroling in
Chicago and its suburbs.
5. In 2002, FANHS-WISCONSIN was primarily responsible for bringing the
Lahing Kayumanggi Dance Ensemble to the Asian Moon Festival that was
followed by a very successful midwest and west coast tour.
6. In 2003 FANHS-WISCONSIN sponsored the SARIMANOK awards: for "Women
of Distinction in Wisconsin". We also sponsored the Philippine
Rondalla of Chicago at the Asian Moon Festival.
7. In 2005, FANHS-WI awarded Outstanding Filipinos in Community
Leadership and Citizenship.
8. Donated books and participated in the Access-Philippines for two
years, 2004 and 2005, a U.S. State Department program that trains
Muslim youths from Mindanao.
9. Participated in the Midwest Conference held in Chicago late
September 2005.
We have about 30 active members, most of whom are also members of
FAAWIS.
