A second $1000 scholarship, available to college undergraduate students, was announced by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Wisconsin, Ltd. (UPAAW). The first scholarship, also for $1000, is available to graduating high school seniors.

    The second scholarship, called the UPAAW Tulod-Printz College Scholarship, is funded by Drs. Jonathan and Magnolia Printz of Brookfield, WI. Magnolia Tulod was a former UPAAW scholarship recipient; she received awards in 2000 and 2001. They recently started their respective medical practices in the Milwaukee area.

    Eligibility requirements for the Tulod-Printz scholarship include: 1) at least 50% Filipino parentage, 2) resident of Wisconsin, 3) adjusted gross family income not to exceed $80K, GPA of at least 2.0, and 4) currently enrolled as a full-time student in a 2- or 4-year college/university in Wisconsin. The recipient of the award is required to submit a verification of attendance letter signed by an officer of the institution he/she is attending in order to receive the award.

    Application forms are now available; requirements include submission of transcript of academic records, work history, co-curricular activities, community activities, a 250-word essay, the student’s 2014 Federal Student Aid Report (SAR), and financial information from the parent/guardian. The major criteria for selecting the recipient of the scholarship are merit and financial need. Deadline for submission of application for 2014 is the end of July. UPAAW Announces New Scholarship Rules

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Wisconsin, Ltd. (UPAAW) recently announced its new rules for awarding college scholarships to graduating high school students residing in Wisconsin. The new rules were adopted to implement the Organization’s goal of social justice in its scholarship programs. The revised scholarship criteria now include an even 50-50 split between merit and financial need.

     Eligibility rules include the following: 1) at least 50% Filipino parentage; 2) resident of Wisconsin; 3) annual adjusted gross family income not to exceed $80,000; 4) GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; and 5) graduating full-time high school student admitted to a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited public/private institution (but may start in a 2-year institution then transfer into a 4-year institution).

     The scholarship, which carries a $1000 cash award to be given to the student, is now open to applicants. Application requirements include submission of a transcript of academic records, the latest ACT/SAT test results, work history, co-curricular activities, community activities, a 250-word essay on career goals and personal values and a copy of the parent’s/guardian’s 2013 1040 tax return. All information contained in the application and supporting documents will be strictly confidential and accessible only to the members of the UPAAW Scholarship Committee.
